Beijing is the capital of the Renmin Republic of China, and is China's political and cultural center. Beijing is one of the best-known historical and cultural cities in the world. As early as 700,000 years ago, the primitive tribe Peking Man appeared in the Zhoukoudian area of Beijing. In its earliest recorded, Beijing was called Ji, which became the capital of the princedom of Jin and Yuan in 1045 B.C. From 21 B.C. when Emperor Qin Shihuang united China, to 937 A.D., Beijing was a place of strategic importance and capital of northern kingdoms. In 938 A.D., Beijing (named Yanjing then) became the secondary capital of Liao Dynasty, which ruled over northern China. Within the ensuing 650 years, Beijing was the capital of Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. On October 1,1949,upon the founding of the People's of China, Beijing became the capital of New China. As a modern metropolis rich in history, culture and tourists' sites, Beijing has much to offer to its visitors.
