To my utmost sadness, I learned that our dear friend and the VLDB2006 General PC Chair,Hongjun Lu, passed away in Guangzhou at 6pm (Chinese Time) on March 3rd. He has been suffering from a lung cancer since last August. He is survived by his wife
and a daughter.

Hongjun was not only a great scholar, but also was a friend to so many people all over the world. I am especially stricken since we have been close friends for over 20 years. We will all dearly miss him.

Hongjun made a great effort to promote database activites in the Asia/Pacific region. We owe him a great deal in raising the level and visibility of database research in this region.

We are all deeply saddened by the loss of a great scholar and leader. We will certainly remember him and his great contributions to the database field. Our deepest condolences to his wife and daughter. May he rest in peace.

Although the time that I have known Hongjun closely is only a few years, I cannot express how sad I feel after seeing your message. I believed in his last email message that he is recovering.

I respect him for the role model that he played as a leading database researcher not only in the Asia/pacific region but also globally.

I still vividly remember the conversion that I had with him last year when he visited my university second time. I was impressed by his thoughtful approach to promoting database research in China. While he was a Chinese who loved China, he was also a truly open-minded leader in the database community as a whole. He emphasized that the Asia/Pacific database community should take more active roles globally and he supported those who are willing to.

In my humble opinion, Hongjun being the general PC chair, VLDB 06 should plan something special in memory of him.

Hongjun's passing away is indeed a great loss to the database community of the entire world. His dedication to help the Chinese database community was unparalleled.

His passing away is also a personal loss to me as a friend. Only last summer during VLDB School 2004, we had dinner together and we climbed the Tai Mountain all the way to the top together! Hongjun was healthy and strong at that time. I was very surprised when he was diagnosed with cancer last Fall. Later I thought he had become better after treatment so I was shocked by the sad news from HKUST.

It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing away of Prof. Hongjun Lu on March 3 from complications arising from his treatment for cancer.

Prof. Lu received the B.Sc. degree from Tsinghua University, China, and the MSc and PhD degrees from the Department of Computer Science, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before joining the Department of Computer Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, he had worked as an engineer in the Chinese Academy of Space Technology, as a principal research scientist in the Computer Science Center of Honeywell Inc., Minnesota, USA (1985-1987) and as a professor at the School of Computing of the National University of Singapore(1987-2000).

Prof. Lu was a world renowned researcher who served the database community with dedication and distinction in various capacities over the years. He was a trustee of the VLDB Endowment, a member of the ACM SIGMOD Advisory Board (1998-2002), an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (TKDE), chair of the steering committee of the International Conference on Web-Age Information Management (WAIM), and co-chair (1998-2001) and chair (2001-2003) of the steering committee of Pacific-Asia Conference of Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (PAKDD). In December, 2004, he was
honored with a Contribution Award by the China Computer Federation Database Society and, just recently, he was honored with this year's inaugural PAKDD Distinguished Contribution Award.

Prof. Lu will be warmly remembered for his infectious cheerfulness, unwavering dedication to his students and unreserved willingness to offer his help wherever and whenever needed. His untimely passing away is a great loss to the entire database community. He will be greatly missed.

We are all saddened by the untimely passing of Prof. Hongjun Lu, though we know he had been in the battle with a terrible cancer.

He has made most outstanding contributions to the international database research community. He has contributed to almost every top database conferences and journals through publishing his researh work, organising conferences as a key organiser such as general chair, PC chair, and serving as an editorial board members of prestigious journals and book series. We are particularly grateful to him for serving as APWeb Steering Committee member, APWEB'04 Genereal Chair and editorial member of a recent WISE Book Series on Web Information Systems Engineering and Intenet Technologies from Springer.

We are also deeply moved by his dedication to database research and development in China. He had set a very fine example to many of overseas Chinese scholars. His passing is a great loss to us. For those who know him well, we lost a dearest friend and colleague, outstanding researcher and educator, whose friendship and sage advice will be always remembered.
